Madonna of Consolation

Early 16th century
Church of Santa Maria Formosa, Venice, Italy

According to the label in the church, this icon was present on the galley of Sebastiano Venier, admiral and later Doge of Venice, during the Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571) and given to the church by his heirs. Other icons and paintings of the same name are quite different, and in none of them that I have examined does the child hold the golden vessel shown here.
